My Role
My role was primarily that of a UX Designer. I collaborated with one team member in creating wireframes, user flows and hi-fi prototypes. I also conducted secondary research into the ethical dilemmas of our project and collaborated with a team member in creating the storyboard
Background
The UXPA UT Austin organized a weekend-long design challenge - A Designathon - where participants work together in teams to create innovative solutions to real-world problems. We had 8 hours to brainstorm and create a solution in the form of a high-fidelity prototype.
About 15 teams participated, and 6 were shortlisted based on a 3-minute pitch. Thereafter, the qualifying teams presented to a panel of judges.
Result - We landed the 2nd place! 🎉
The prompt
Brainstorm and redesign the user experience of a currently available digital product by integrating it with a generative AI using Figma. The goal is to create a user-friendly and practical design that leverages the power of generative AI to improve a significant part of the digital user experience.
UX Roadmap
Brainstorm
Brainstorming ideas, exploring avenues for generative AI
Storyboard
Storyboarding to understand user motivations
User Journey
Enumerate features of the design
Creating a user journey to clarify how user will interact with the product
Prototype
Create a high-fidelity prototype of the idea.
Use the existing product's design system in doing so
Brainstorming
We began by checking out existing generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, Midjourney etc. Some interesting ideas came to mind, for example, using such technologies to create customized cover letters, etc. However, in the spirit of innovation, we wanted to envision a futuristic generative AI technology and design a product around that.
This New York Times article I read proved to be an interesting talking point. The article talks about editing Roald Dahl's books to conform to today's cultural and political sensibilities. We discussed how a lot of films, music, books and other form of media had not aged well and were facing criticisms for how they portrayed certain characters and communities and ultimately reinforced stereotypes.
But what if you could change that?

The problem statement
How might we empower Netflix users to easily create custom movies, collaborate with others, and foster a sense of community, potentially creating new original content?
Gathering Inspiration

Max Tegmark is an important figure in AI due to his contributions to theories that have advanced our understanding of AI's impact on society.
In his seminal book, Life 3.0, he talks about a fictional generative AI called ‘Prometheus’ which was used to generate customized media content based on watch histories of individual users.
Presenting
NETFLIX And I
WHAT?
A feature Add-On
Generate movies based on their own ideas
Socially engaging users for making and watching movies
Seamlessly integrate those ideas into compelling and unique films
WHY?
Our motivations
Provides a fun and creative outlet for users to express themselves
Fosters a sense of community by encouraging social engagement
Empowering uses to create new and potentially original content
HOW?
Is AI leveraged?
To provide prompt suggestions based on the user’s watch history
To provide suggestions that are tailored to their individual interests
To generate movies based on the prompts entered by the user
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
We debated a lot about the possible ethical considerations that could come in the way of such an idea. Here's how we believe they can be tackled -
Intellectual property rights & permissions: Ensure that the generative AI media does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of the original creators of the movies used.
Representation and bias: Take steps to ensure that the generative AI media does not perpetuate harmful stereotypes, reinforce bias, or misrepresent marginalized groups.
Accountability: Establish clear mechanisms of accountability for any negative consequences that may arise from the use of generative AI technology
Impact on the creative industry: Consider the potential impact that generative AI technology may have on the creative industry and how it may affect the livelihoods of creators and artists.
User Journey
3.1 Brainstorming features
We used Figjam to put together a list of features that we wanted our design to have

3.2 User Journey
After narrowing down some features from the brainstorming session, we created a user journey map. This also served as a primer to design screens for our prototype

Prototyping
4.1 Lo-fi Wireframes

4.2 Hi-fidelity screens

Get together with friends to create unique prompts and unique movies
Choose the language, duration, genre and much more
Multi-lingual support today means dubbing. However, the AI here would generate content with lipsyncing with the user’s preferred language.
Use the Advanced Settings feature to get access to a wider range of settings.
Use parameters like "Aspect Ratio", "Style" etc. to further customize your movie to your preferences

Based on your prompts, Netflix AI suggests entire movies that you use to inspire your movie

The generated content can be color graded for specific types of color blindness based on the users

Grab your popcorn. Your movie is ready 🍿

What would I have done differently
This was my first Designathon, or a Design Sprint if you may. It was a lot of fun working in a team and creating a full-fledged experience in a short span of time. However, I definitely had a lot to learn.
Hinging onto the ethical considerations a little too much. We spent a good chunk of time debating on whether this product would be feasible given the plethora of ethical concerns with generative AI. While that was important, I now know that not all concerns can be ironed out and it's alright to box away some of them and work harder on the experience itself.
Making it more accessible. We tried to make our design accessible for users with vision impairment. However, with better time management, I would've liked to also design for users with hearing impairment. I had a lot of raw and fascinating ideas, and it would've been interesting to integrate them.
Overall though, the experience was unforgettable. I'm really grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a fantastic and brilliant team. 10/10 would do so again :)
